What Music Transports You Back in Time?

During uncertain times, music becomes my time machine to better days

Me in college

I find myself listening to a lot of music lately from the 1990s and early 2000s.

I came of age during that time, and something about listening to music from that era brings me back. I could be in the kitchen playing Green Day or Bush and cooking breakfast, but I feel like a 16-year-old making scrambled eggs, singing into the butter knife like it’s a microphone and playing air guitar (because of course I wanted to be a rock star, even though I never played guitar, but also a movie director).

I like some of the music from today, but I prefer my generation’s music. Perhaps that makes me an old geezer — I don’t know — but it feels … safe.

The world is deeply unstable right now. So much could go sideways, but in the 90s, things felt steadier. I can look at old photos from that time to try and remember, but when I play music from the era, it transports me. Music becomes my time machine.

If you’re feeling uneasy lately, I urge you to play your favorite music from your past. What would you listen to? I’m curious. Share in the comments. Perhaps we can develop our own playlist. :)
